FAQs

Answers to Help You Navigate Through Difficult Times

What is Aquamation®

A Natural, Earth-Friendly Farewell — also known as alkaline hydrolysis or water cremation - is a gentle, sustainable alternative to traditional flame cremation and burial. Instead of using fire, Aquamation® uses a warm water solution and natural alkalis to return the body to its elemental form, closely mimicking the natural decomposition process that occurs in soil over time.

Why Aquamation® Is Better for the Environment

Aquamation® is the most environmentally responsible farewell available today. Here's why:

No Harmful Emissions

Unlike flame cremation, Aquamation® produces no smoke, mercury, or carbon dioxide—protecting the air we breathe and the climate we share.

Minimal Energy Use

Aquamation® uses up to 90% less energy than traditional cremation, making it one of the gentlest options for the planet.

Water-Safe & Non-Toxic

The process produces a sterile, nutrient-rich solution that’s safely removed —containing no chemicals, DNA, or toxins.

No Caskets or Embalming

No need for hardwood caskets or embalming fluids, reducing waste.

Gentle on the Earth

With soft ashes and zero environmental burden, Aquamation® honours your loved one—and the natural world they leave behind.

What are the benefits of pre-planning an Aquamation®?

Pre-planning relieves your family of making decisions during a stressful time, ensures your wishes are understood, and can lock in costs at current prices.

Less family stress later: All decisions and payments are already sorted. You stay in control: Pick the exact eco‑friendly service you want. Possible asset protection: Prepaid funds can be shielded from aged‑care means tests. In short: cheaper, worry‑free, and kinder on both your family and the planet

Why Aquamation® leaves no DNA behind

During aquamation®, the body rests in warm water mixed with gentle natural alkali— a process a bit like accelerated natural decomposition. Over several hours, the solution carefully breaks everything down to simple organic molecules. Even the delicate DNA strands are dissolved, so nothing that could identify a person remains. What’s left is pure, sterile bone ash—perfectly safe for families to keep or scatter—with no trace of genetic material. It’s a clean, respectful transformation that returns your loved one to nature in the gentlest way possible.

Are there customisable options for memorial products?

Yes, we offer a range of eco-friendly memorial options.

You can personalise everything to reflect your loved one’s life:

- Ash style: Choose regular, extra-fine (for easy scattering), or soil‑ready for planting.

- Urns: Pick from classic metal, handcrafted wood, pottery, or biodegradable designs.

- Keepsakes: Share ashes in mini-urns, jewellery, or glass beads.

- Farewell options: Scatter on land or sea, plant a memorial tree, or create an ocean reef tribute.

Each choice supports a natural, heartfelt goodbye.

When will my loved one be returned home?

Your loved one’s aquamation® process typically takes about 7 to 14 days from the time it starts. After that, the ashes and any chosen memorial items will be ready for you to bring home. The exact timing depends on the memorial options selected, such as special urns or keepsakes, which might add a few extra days for preparation. Rest assured, everything is handled thoughtfully and respectfully.
